Guided cycling tours in Puglia, based in Salento

Whether you're searching for puglia bike tours, puglia bike trips or an apulia bike tour — Apulia is the English name for the region — this page covers the same thing: small-group, guided cycling based in Lecce. From what we've seen of the main operators covering Puglia, most run tours out of the Valle d'Itria or treat Salento as one stop among many on a wider regional loop. We're based in Lecce, in the middle of Salento, and that's where every one of our tours starts and finishes. If you want to add a Valle d'Itria stage — trulli, white-stone lanes, the Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese — we can build that in too; see cycling in Puglia for how the different riding areas of the region fit together.

Every tour is guided, built around real routes we can name and measure, not generic "rolling hills and olive groves" copy. Below: the three formats we run — half-day, full-day and multi-day — with real distances and surfaces for the routes we use most, and pricing in full. If you're looking for a guided day ride within Salento specifically, see bike tours in Salento & Lecce. For the multi-day format without a guide, see self-guided bike tours in Puglia; for a fully planned multi-day holiday built around your dates, see cycling holidays in Puglia.

Elevation117 m
SurfaceMostly asphalt, with two short sections of compacted gravel near the coast
RouteLecce area out to Torre Specchia, San Cataldo and Frigole, past the Le Cesine wetland reserve
BikesRoad or gravel — gravel is more comfortable on the unpaved sections
Group size4-8 riders
Ideal forA first morning in Salento, or riders who want a short, flat introduction
Not ideal forAnyone after real distance or climbing — this is a warm-up, not a challenge

Distances measured on the published Torre Specchia–San Cataldo–Frigole route (piste-ciclabili.com). One thing worth knowing: part of this route runs near the Torre Veneri military firing range, which can close to the public during exercises. If that's the case on your date, your guide will take a short diversion around it — this is covered in the route briefing before departure that's included on every tour.

Full-day tour — the Litoranea, Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca

Small group, 4-8 riders · €200/person · Ask about this tour

SpecValue
Distance52.6 km (32.7 miles)
Elevation430 m
SurfaceAsphalt throughout, provincial road (SP358, last 8 km on SP87)
RouteThe coastal road south from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca, continuous gentle rises and drops, highest point around 125 m at Torre Nasparo
BikesRoad, gravel or e-bike — the elevation is manageable but constant, e-bike takes the edge off on a hot day
Group size4-8 riders
Ideal forConfident riders who want one long coastal day rather than a multi-day trip
Not ideal forFirst-time cyclists — 52 km with 430 m of climbing in a day is a real effort

Distances from bici.style. This stretch is also the subject of an active roadworks project by the Provincia di Lecce to add dedicated cycle-path sections alongside the existing carriageway — the route is rideable today on asphalt, but signage and short diversions can change while works continue. Current conditions on this stretch are checked and covered in the route briefing before departure that's included on every tour.

Multi-day tour — routes from Lecce, 2 days to a week

Small group, 6-10 riders · From €180/person/day, accommodation included · Guided or self-guided · Ask about this tour

SpecValue
Duration2 days up to a week — you choose, always starting and finishing in Lecce

BikesRoad or gravel; e-bike available on request
Group size6-10 riders
Ideal forRiders who want several days on the bike without repeating roads, with accommodation already arranged
Not ideal forAnyone wanting a single fixed itinerary — every multi-day trip is built around your dates and the number of days you pick

Base route — the Two Seas loop: a loop from Lecce out to San Cataldo, San Foca, the Le Cesine reserve, Roca Vecchia, Torre dell'Orso, Calimera, Copertino and Porto Cesareo, back to Lecce — 115.7 km (71.9 miles), 391 m of climbing, close to flat with a maximum gradient of about 3%. Distance and gradient data from the Tour dei Due Mari route on piste-ciclabili.com; the route notes recommend riding it October to May to avoid summer heat and traffic on the shared provincial roads. This is the loop that passes closest to home: San Foca and Calimera are two of our shops with free bike pickup, so logistics are already in place there if you want to extend into a rental period before or after the tour.

Want to extend north? A separate, gravel-surface option is the Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese, a dedicated cycle path (no traffic) that currently runs for roughly 22 km (13.7 miles) through the Valle d'Itria, outside Salento proper — a possible add-on for a longer multi-day trip. Source: Regione Puglia. Ask us if you want a route combining both areas.

The daily rate includes overnight stays through our hotel partnerships along the route — the price covers riding and accommodation, not just the bike.

Meeting point and how it works

Tours start and finish at one of our three points — Lecce (Via Francesco Ribezzo 2D), San Foca (Via D'Annunzio 13) or Calimera (Via Roma 163) — depending on the route: the half-day and multi-day loop start in Lecce, the Litoranea full-day tour is more convenient from San Foca or Calimera. Other meeting points are available on request.

  1. Tell us your dates and which format suits you.
  2. We confirm the route, bike sizes and group.
  3. Meet us at the agreed point in Lecce, San Foca or Calimera.
  4. Ride with a local guide — water stops and mechanical support included throughout.

Before you ride: what to expect

Salento's secondary roads carry little traffic once you're outside town centres, but the routes above do run on shared carriageway, not dedicated cycle paths, except for the short Acquedotto Pugliese section. Two practical points: water refill stops are limited between towns, especially on the Litoranea and Two Seas routes, so we plan them into the day rather than leaving you to find one; and the best riding months are April to June and September to October, on the numbers as much as on preference — average highs run 19.3°C to 29.5°C in spring and 22.8°C to 27.7°C in early autumn, against 32.3°C in July and 32.2°C in August (1981-2010 climate normals for Lecce, Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale). The route notes for the Two Seas loop make the same point for a different reason, recommending October to May to avoid summer traffic on the shared provincial roads. See our Salento travel guide for wider trip-planning around a tour, including getting to Lecce and where to base yourself. For more on the towns these routes pass through — Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, the Le Cesine reserve — see our guide to the best places to visit in Puglia.

FAQ

What's the difference between the half-day, full-day and multi-day tours?
Distance, effort and length of trip. The half-day ride is 20.5 km and flat, the full-day tour is 52.6 km with 430 m of climbing, and multi-day trips run 2 days to a week with accommodation included. Pick based on how much riding you want, and whether you're after a single outing or a full trip.
Do I need to be an experienced cyclist?
For the half-day ride, no — it's flat and short. The full-day and multi-day tours involve real distance and some climbing, so a reasonable base fitness helps. An e-bike is available on any tour if you'd rather not push hard on the climbs.
What's the maximum group size?
Groups run 4-8 riders on the half-day and full-day tours, 6-10 on multi-day trips. We keep numbers capped by design, so everyone gets real attention from the guide instead of being stuck at the back of a long line on shared roads.
Can I ride the gravel sections on a road bike?
The half-day route has two short compacted-gravel stretches — manageable on a road bike but more comfortable on gravel tyres. The full-day and Two Seas routes are asphalt throughout, so a road bike is fine there.
What happens if I get a puncture or the bike breaks down?
Mechanical support is included on every tour: the guide carries a repair kit and a spare inner tube and fixes most roadside issues on the spot. For anything more serious, our mechanics are on call to give immediate support and get you back on the road.
What happens if it rains on the day?
We reschedule where possible or adjust the route to shorter, more sheltered roads.
What's your cancellation policy?
We don't publish a fixed cancellation policy on this page — most guided tour operators in Puglia handle this the same way. Ask us when you enquire and we'll tell you the terms that apply to your dates before you book.
Is there a minimum age for guided tours?
There's no fixed minimum age. The half-day ride suits confident young riders; the full-day and multi-day tours need more stamina, so they're better suited to teenagers and adults. Tell us the ages in your group and we'll recommend the right tour.
Do you speak English?
Yes — all tours run in English. Ask about other languages when you get in touch.

Tell us your dates. We'll match you to a half-day, full-day or multi-day route, confirm bikes and group size, and set the meeting point in Lecce, San Foca or Calimera.
