Self-guided tours in Puglia and Salento

Self-guided tours in Puglia and Salento

Routes we ride ourselves, turned into itineraries you ride at your own pace: the bike set up for you, GPX tracks, a digital roadbook and us on the phone the whole way. You choose where to sleep and when to stop.

Self-Guided Bike Tours in Puglia: Routes, GPX Notes and Support on Call

What "self-guided" means here

Self-guided means one specific thing on this page: you ride a route we've planned, sleep in hotels we've already booked, and nobody rides next to you. There's no group to keep up with and no guide setting the pace.

It sits between two other formats on this site. If you'd rather have a local guide riding with your group for the whole trip, that's the guided multi-day tour on bike tours in Puglia — same routes, same price structure, a guide instead of GPX notes. If you'd rather we also handle the full holiday planning around the ride, see cycling holidays in Puglia. This page covers the self-guided format specifically: what we hand you before departure, what's fixed and what's flexible, and what happens if something goes wrong on the road.

Trips run from 2 days up to a week, always starting and finishing at our base in Lecce (Via Francesco Ribezzo 2D). For how self-guided fits alongside rental, guided tours and holidays across the wider region, see cycling in Puglia.

How self-guided works

  1. You tell us your dates and how many days. We confirm a route and a run of hotels to match — a short trip stays inside Salento, a full week can extend further.
  2. We book the hotels. Rooms are arranged through our hotel partnerships along the route before you arrive, so you're not calling ahead each night.
  3. You collect the bike at Via Francesco Ribezzo 2D, Lecce, fitted to your size, together with printed route notes as backup — distances, surface changes and water points marked out in advance. GPX files for each day are sent to you by email after booking, so you can load them onto your device before you travel.
  4. You ride at your own pace. No guide travels with you — stop where you want, start when you want, within the days you've booked. The hotel for that night is booked regardless of what time you get there.
  5. Support stays on call. Our number in Lecce is answered 24/7 for the length of your trip — if the bike gives trouble or you're unsure about the route, call and we talk you through it.
  6. You finish back in Lecce, where you started.

If something goes wrong on the road

A straightforward puncture is covered by the repair kit and spare inner tube that come with the bike. A serious mechanical failure is rarer, but it's the scenario most self-guided riders worry about, since there's no guide travelling with the group carrying tools. If it happens, call the same Lecce number: our mechanics give immediate support and talk you through getting back on the road. This is the same mechanical back-up behind every rental and guided tour we run — on a self-guided trip, it's the part of the package that matters most.

The route

The loop we use most for a standard multi-day trip runs out of Lecce to San Cataldo, San Foca, the Le Cesine wetland reserve, Roca Vecchia, Torre dell'Orso, Calimera, Copertino and Porto Cesareo, back to Lecce — 115.7 km (71.9 miles) in total, 391 m of climbing, close to flat with a maximum gradient of around 3%. Distance and gradient are from the Tour dei Due Mari route on piste-ciclabili.com. On a self-guided trip we split this loop, and any extension of it, across the number of days you book, rather than riding it in one push.

For a longer week, one option is a gravel stage on the Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese, a dedicated cycle path with no traffic, running for roughly 22 km (13.7 miles) through the Valle d'Itria — source: Regione Puglia. Tell us if you want a route that combines both areas; we'll build the days and hotels around it.

Who this suits

Self-guided suits riders who are comfortable following a GPX file or printed notes and don't need company on the road, but don't want to plan hotels or routes themselves. If you'd rather have someone riding with you who knows the roads first-hand, the guided version of this same multi-day trip is on bike tours in Puglia.

It's not the right fit for anyone who's never followed a GPX track before and doesn't want to learn on the trip, or for a group that wants each day's distance and pace fixed by someone else. Ask us and we'll tell you honestly whether self-guided or guided suits your group better.

Where the route takes you

Salento's flat roads put much of the region's coastline and old towns within reach across a multi-day trip. For background on what's along or near the route, see our guide to the best places to visit in Puglia and things to do in Puglia for wine tastings, sea caves and other stops worth building into a rest day.

FAQ

What does "self-guided" actually mean?
You ride the route we've planned and sleep in hotels we've booked, without a guide riding with you. Before you leave we give you GPX files and printed route notes for each day, and our phone line stays open throughout the trip if you need anything.
How do I find my way without a guide?
From the GPX files and printed route notes we give you before departure. Each day's distance, surface and water points are marked out in advance, so you're not improvising the route as you go.
What happens if the bike breaks down or I get a puncture?
A puncture is covered by the repair kit and spare inner tube that come with the bike. For anything more serious, call the same number that's open 24/7 at our Lecce base — our mechanics give immediate support and talk you through getting back on the road.
Who books the hotels?
We do. Accommodation is arranged through our hotel partnerships along the route before you arrive, so you're not calling ahead each night — you get the address and check-in details with your route notes.
Is there a minimum group size?
The €180/person/day rate applies to groups of 6 to 10 riders. Travelling as a couple or a smaller party is possible, at a different per-day rate — ask us for a quote before you book.
Can I ride at my own pace, or is there a schedule?
Your own pace, within the days you've booked. There's no group to keep up with and no fixed daily start time — the hotel for that night is booked regardless of what time you arrive.
What's the difference between this and a guided multi-day tour?
The route, price structure and hotels are the same. The difference is whether someone rides with you: guided means a local guide is on the road with your group throughout; self-guided means GPX files, route notes and phone support instead, and you ride independently. See bike tours in Puglia for the guided version.
Is there a minimum age, and what language is the trip run in?
There's no fixed minimum age — self-guided suits confident, independent riders more than young children, since nobody rides with the group. Route notes and phone support are in English; ask about other languages when you get in touch. Tell us who's travelling and we'll advise whether self-guided or the guided version fits better.
