68.9 km, 152 m of climbing, essentially flat: high point 78 m, at sea level for most of its length along the Ionian coast. About 4.8 hours of riding at 15 km/h. We ride it ourselves, and it is the ride we suggest to anyone who wants to skip the delivery and start the holiday on the bike: collect in Lecce in the morning, cross the peninsula on quiet lanes, reach the Ionian north of Gallipoli and follow the coast into town. Gallipoli in a day: Baia Verde, Punta della Suina, Porto Selvaggio
The ride we recommend from Gallipoli is about 30 km, mostly flat, and fills a whole day if you let it. Leave the old town over the bridge and head south along the seafront to Baia Verde, then on to the pine woods of Punta della Suina: the last part is on tracks through the regional park, sand and rock, better on a gravel bike or an e-bike. Come back through town and swap direction: north of Gallipoli the coast road runs to Santa Maria al Bagno and Santa Caterina, quiet outside August, then reaches the Porto Selvaggio park, where the tarmac ends and a path drops to the cove. Swim, lunch from the frame bag under the pines, ride back in the afternoon. One thing to plan for: on this coast the wind tends to come off the sea and build during the day, so do the longer leg in the morning. We give you the route with the bike.
Inland from Gallipoli, the lanes towards Alezio, Sannicola and Nardò are flat and quiet, white roads between olive groves and dry-stone walls: gravel bike territory.
