Recommended routes for gravel biking in Salento

Salento is an amazing land to explore while riding a gravel bike, thanks to its variety of landscapes, dirt trails among olive groves and dry stone walls, back roads connecting ancient villages, and the possibility of pedaling between two seas: the Adriatic and the Ionian. Our knowledge of the area allows us to suggest itineraries suitable for all levels, from beginners to experienced cyclists, with tested routes and unforgettable landscapes.

▶ Coast-to-coast Adriatic-Ionian.

coast to coast adriatic ionian by bike

A unique experience for those who want to cross Salento from east to west, starting from the coast of San Foca on the Adriatic to the calm waters of Porto Cesareo on the Ionian. The route travels on secondary roads, rural dirt tracks and ancient sheep-tracks through open countryside, small agricultural centers and natural areas. Along the way you will encounter fortified farms, old railway stations, monumental olive groves and vineyards. It is the ideal tour for those seeking variety of landscapes and the pleasure of a complete journey, with food and wine stops and opportunities to stop at farmhouses.

▶ Grecìa Salentina in gravel

A circular route that touches the villages of Grecìa Salentina, an area rich in history and culture, where the ancient Griko dialect is still spoken. It starts from Calimera and crosses Sternatia, Zollino, Martano and Carpignano Salentino, pedaling on white roads, rural streets and paved stretches with very low traffic. The landscape is dominated by olive trees, Baroque churches and ancient stone courtyards. Perfect for those seeking a cultural tour with a leisurely pace, also ideal for those with first experience with gravel.

▶ Among the olive trees and ancient stone.

Salento by bike

A fascinating route that starts from Vernole and touches Acaya, one of the best-preserved fortified villages in Salento, and then reaches the Le Cesine Nature Reserve. The route develops among sheep-tracks, old country roads and coastal dirt stretches, with long passages between dry stone walls and agricultural landscapes dominated by centuries-old olive trees. Access to the reserve allows cycling in a protected natural environment, among lagoons, Mediterranean scrub and sandy stretches. Ideal for those who love nature and tranquility, with opportunities for birdwatching and photography.

▶ Gravel along the Adriatic coast.

A scenic route that follows the coastline from Torre dell’Orso to Santa Cesarea Terme, passing iconic locations such as Roca Vecchia, Torre Sant’Andrea and Otranto. The route alternates between paved sections overlooking the sea and dirt paths and groomed tracks along cliffs and pine forests. Sheer cliffs, sea caves, coastal towers and hidden coves make this route one of the most spectacular in Salento. Recommended for cyclists with a minimum of experience, given the presence of short gradients and mixed terrain, but perfectly rideable with a well-equipped gravel bike.
