Bike rental in Otranto

Otranto is the easternmost town in Italy and the start of the best coast road in Salento. We are SalentoBike, a bike rental based in Lecce: we bring a Trek road, gravel or e-bike to where you are staying in Otranto, or you collect it for free at one of our three points. This page is about riding from Otranto: the Coast Road to Leuca, the Via Francigena stages through town, which bike for the climbs of Capo di Leuca, and how to get the bike from Lecce. The tracks come with the rental.

How to get a bike in Otranto

Delivery to Otranto. We bring the bikes to your accommodation and collect them at the end. The fee is quoted by distance and written in your quote before you book; above 1,000 € of rental, delivery is included.

Free pickup. Collect and return at Lecce (Via Ribezzo 2D), San Foca (Via D'Annunzio 13) or Calimera (Via Roma 163). Calimera is the closest to Otranto and sits on the inland Francigena line: from there it is a flat ride through Martano and the Grecìa villages. Hours are flexible.

By train. Regional trains carry bikes; ask us which connection fits. Lecce is the hub, so the simplest plan is to collect in Lecce and ride to Otranto: inland on the Francigena (Martano → Otranto is 30.5 km) or along the Adriatic via Le Cesine, part of a 99.9 km day we ride ourselves. See bike rental in Lecce.

The Coast Road: Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca

52.3 km, 571 m of climbing, all tarmac. Hilly by Puglia standards: the longest climb is 1.2 km for 69 m, the high point 143 m above the sea, and the road rises and drops the whole way. We ride it ourselves: the best single day in Salento on a road bike.

From Otranto, the first stretch past Porto Badisco is the wildest: cliffs, no villages, a couple of rises that bite. Santa Cesarea Terme comes at around km 16–22, Castro and the Zinzulusa cave at about km 24. Turn back at Castro for a hard half-day of roughly 48 km, or push on through Tricase Porto and Novaglie to the lighthouse at Leuca. From there, ride back on the flatter inland roads or ask us for a collection, quoted by distance. If Leuca is where your holiday ends, a one-way rental closes the loop.

Two of these are stages of the Via Francigena del Sud, the pilgrim route from Brindisi to Leuca through Otranto. We recorded them on foot, so they are for gravel and e-bikes, not road bikes: some sections are unpaved. Otranto is where the lines meet: arrive from Martano inland, leave south on the Coast Road. North of town, the ride to the Alimini lakes and Baia dei Turchi is flat and easy, a rest-day swim rather than a full ride.

Which bike for the Otranto coast

Road bike (Trek Domane AL) if the Coast Road is your goal: all tarmac, and the climbs of Capo di Leuca are short and steep rather than long. Gravel (Trek Checkpoint ALR, 42 mm tubeless) if you also want the Francigena stages or the tracks around the Alimini lakes. E-bike (Trek or Rockrider) for the cliffs without the climbing: for the full 52 km to Leuca on a Trek, add the second battery; the Rockrider E-ACTV 100 has a removable battery and 70–80 km of range. Sizes XS to 61, riders from about 150 to 197 cm.
