The best time to visit Puglia for cycling is April to June or September to October: mean temperatures run from 13.7°C to 22.7°C (56.7-72.9°F), daylight from 11 to 15 hours, and the coast roads are far quieter than in August. July and August are hot and busy; November to March is quiet but windier and wetter.

Key facts

Spring in Puglia: April to June

Spring is the mildest of Puglia's four seasons and, together with autumn, the one we recommend for cycling. Average temperatures climb steadily through the season: April's mean is 13.7°C (56.7°F, average high 19.3°C/66.7°F, average low 8.0°C/46.4°F), May reaches a mean of 18.5°C (65.3°F, average high 24.9°C/76.8°F), and June averages 22.7°C (72.9°F, average high 29.5°C/85.1°F) — figures from the 1981-2010 climate normals for Lecce.

Daylight lengthens fast across the season, from around 13 hours 20 minutes in mid-April to the year's longest day, close to 15 hours 6 minutes, around the summer solstice in late June.

Rainfall drops through the season too: April averages 45.5 mm over 6.2 days, June just 20.4 mm over 3 days, so late spring is both warm and dry.

Easter brings a short burst of visitors, then the region quietens until school summer holidays begin in late June. Accommodation prices sit below the July-August peak.

For cycling, April and May are close to ideal: warm but not yet hot, long daylight windows, and country roads that stay quiet outside Easter week. June is a different month from the other two — its average high of 29.5°C (85.1°F) is within 3°C of July's, so by then an early start is worth planning for. Puglia's flat, sea-exposed geography keeps Salento breezy for most of the year, so expect some wind on exposed coastal stretches even in spring.

Summer in Puglia: July and August

July and August are Puglia's hottest and busiest months. July's mean temperature is 25.5°C (77.9°F), with an average high of 32.3°C (90.1°F); August is almost identical, at a mean of 25.6°C (78.1°F) and an average high of 32.2°C (90.0°F). Both are the driest months of the year: July averages just 16.2 mm of rain over 1.9 days, August 36.0 mm over 2.2 days.

Daylight stays long — around 14 hours 49 minutes in mid-July, 13 hours 50 minutes by mid-August — but heat, not light, is the limiting factor for riding.

August is the busiest month for domestic tourism in Italy, and Puglia is no exception: the 15 August Ferragosto public holiday marks the peak, with coastal towns, beach roads and restaurants at their fullest and prices at their highest. Reserve accommodation, and bike rentals, well ahead if you're travelling in this window.

On a bike, midday heat above 32°C (90°F) makes the middle of the day uncomfortable and, for longer rides, unwise. We recommend starting early, before 9am, and treating the hours around midday as a break rather than riding through them. Coastal roads to the beaches also carry more car traffic than usual, especially at weekends and around Ferragosto.

Autumn in Puglia: September and October

Autumn brings temperatures back down close to spring levels, while the sea, warmed all summer, stays swimmable well into September. September's mean is 21.8°C (71.2°F, average high 27.7°C/81.9°F); October cools further to a mean of 17.7°C (63.9°F, average high 22.8°C/73.0°F).

Daylight shortens through the season, from around 12 hours 31 minutes in mid-September to 11 hours 13 minutes in mid-October.

Rain returns: September averages 54.3 mm over 4.8 days, and October is the second-wettest month of the year at 91.0 mm over 6.3 days, behind only November. Pack for the possibility of rain, even though most days stay dry.

Crowds thin out quickly after the last week of August. September still draws visitors extending the summer, but by October, towns and coast roads are noticeably quieter. It's also harvest season: the Primitivo grape harvest wraps up in late August and Negroamaro continues into October (see our wine tasting guide), and the olive harvest — la raccolta — begins in late October and runs mostly into December, with Olio di Puglia IGP rules allowing picking as late as 31 January, covered in our Puglia experiences guide.

Things to do in Puglia in October lean toward mild-weather sightseeing and cycling rather than the beach: old towns like Lecce and Otranto (see our Salento travel guide) are comfortable to explore on foot at midday, and country roads are quiet enough for longer rides without the summer heat.

Winter in Puglia: November to March

Winter is Puglia's quietest and coolest season, though rarely severe. November is the wettest month of the year, averaging 95.1 mm of rain over 7.8 days, with a mean temperature of 13.1°C (55.6°F, average high 17.8°C/64.0°F). December through February are the coldest months: December averages 9.7°C (49.5°F, average high 14.1°C/57.4°F), January 8.4°C (47.1°F, average high 13.1°C/55.6°F, the coldest month of the year), and February 8.5°C (47.3°F, average high 13.4°C/56.1°F). March starts the warm-up, with a mean of 10.6°C (51.1°F, average high 15.9°C/60.6°F).

Daylight is the shortest of the year, down to around 9 hours 20 minutes at the winter solstice in late December, recovering to roughly 9 hours 40 minutes by mid-January and nearly 12 hours by mid-March.

This is Puglia's off-season: many seasonal beach establishments close, prices drop, and towns empty of day-trippers. Salento's flat, sea-exposed landscape leaves it open to wind year-round, with the cold north-easterly bora more typical of winter and the warm southerly sirocco of summer. We have not found published monthly wind normals for Lecce from an official source, so treat this as a general characterisation rather than a measured figure, and check current conditions on ARPA Puglia's meteorological network before a winter ride.

Cycling is possible through winter — daytime temperatures rarely drop below freezing — but short daylight limits ride length, and wind and rain are less predictable than in spring or autumn, so check the forecast a few days out rather than a week ahead.

Best months for cycling in Puglia

For cycling specifically, April-June and September-October are the two windows we recommend — the same shoulder seasons covered above, and here's the data behind that recommendation.

PeriodMean temperatureDaylight (approx.)What riding is like
Apr-Jun (spring)13.7-22.7°C (56.7-72.9°F)13h20-15h06Mild to warm, long daylight, roads quiet outside Easter week
Jul-Aug (summer)25.5-25.6°C (77.9-78.1°F)13h50-14h49Hot by midday — early starts only, coast roads busier with traffic
Sep-Oct (autumn)17.7-21.8°C (63.9-71.2°F)11h13-12h31Mild and quiet, more rain days than spring
Nov-Mar (winter)8.4-13.1°C (47.1-55.6°F)9h20-11h58Rarely freezing, but short daylight and less predictable wind and rain

Temperature is the clearest reason. Summer's 32°C+ (90°F+) highs make midday riding uncomfortable, while winter's mean of 8-13°C (47-56°F) is manageable on its own but paired with the year's shortest daylight, as little as 9 hours 20 minutes around the solstice. Spring and autumn sit in between, with means from 13.7°C to 22.7°C (56.7-72.9°F) and 11 to over 15 hours of daylight depending on the month. Those five months are not interchangeable, though: June and September are the warmest of them, at average highs of 29.5°C (85.1°F) and 27.7°C (81.9°F), while April, May and October stay between 19.3°C and 24.9°C (66.7-76.8°F).

Rain is the second factor. June is the driest month of the year, at just 20.4 mm over 3 days; October is close to the wettest, at 91.0 mm over 6.3 days. Neither rules out riding, but June gives better odds of a dry week.

Wind is a constant across Salento's flat, sea-exposed terrain rather than a single-season problem — expect it on open coastal roads whatever month you ride, and check local conditions before setting off.

Traffic is the third factor: August's coast roads carry noticeably more cars than April's or October's, on top of the heat.

Shoulder season is best for cycling — check bike availability. Rent a road or gravel bike for dry spring and autumn asphalt, or an e-bike if you're riding through the last of the summer heat.

FAQ

Is October good for cycling in Puglia? Yes. October's mean temperature is 17.7°C (63.9°F), daylight is still over 11 hours, and roads are quieter than in summer. Rain is more likely than in spring — October averages 91.0 mm over 6.3 days — so check the forecast and pack a light shell.

Is Puglia too hot in August? For midday cycling, yes — average highs reach 32.2°C (90°F). For general travel it's manageable if you plan around the heat: early starts, shade in the afternoon, evening activity. August is also Puglia's busiest and most expensive month.

When does Puglia get crowded? Late July through August, peaking around the 15 August Ferragosto public holiday, when coastal towns and beach roads are at their fullest. Crowds thin quickly after the last week of August; April-June and September-October stay comparatively quiet.

What is the best month to visit Puglia? It depends what you want. For beaches and warm sea, July-August. For cycling and comfortable sightseeing, April-June or September-October. For low prices and empty towns, November-March — see our guide to Puglia's best places to visit for planning a longer trip.

What are the best things to do in Puglia in October? Mild-weather sightseeing and cycling: old towns like Lecce and Otranto are comfortable to walk at midday, country roads are quiet, and the Negroamaro grape harvest and the start of the olive harvest are both underway — see our wine tasting and Puglia experiences guides.

Is Puglia windy? Yes, most of the year. Salento's flat, sea-exposed geography leaves it open to wind year-round — the cold north-easterly bora is more typical in winter, the warm southerly sirocco in summer. We have not found published monthly wind normals for Lecce from an official source, so we describe this rather than quantify it: expect wind on open coastal roads whatever month you ride, and check current conditions before setting off.
