Bike rental in Ostuni
Ostuni sits at 207 m on the last ridge before the sea, 8 km from the coast, and that is the whole story of cycling here: every ride out is a descent to the Adriatic or a rolling loop into the Valle d'Itria, and every ride back ends with a climb to the White City. The cheaper way is the train. Regional trains between Lecce and Bari stop at Ostuni and carry bikes: collect at Via Ribezzo 2D, a short ride from Lecce station, and get off at Ostuni. In Puglia a regional agreement makes the bike free on regional trains when the timetable allows it; the national supplement is otherwise 3.50 € for the day. Ostuni station is below the town: an STP bus links it to Via Tenente Specchia by Piazza della Libertà every 40 minutes, and on a bike the climb to the old town is the warm-up.
Ostuni to the sea and back
The ride everyone asks for is the descent to Torre Canne: 18.9 km from Piazza della Libertà to the lighthouse, 224 m downhill and 3 m up, on lanes through the old olive groves. Torre Canne is inside the Dune Costiere regional park, created in 2006 between Torre Canne and Torre San Leonardo: junipers on the dunes and three small rivers where migrating waterbirds stop. Swim, then choose the way back: the same lanes, or east along the shore on the Via Francigena stage from Torre Canne to Torre Santa Sabina, 30 km with 83 m of climbing, recorded on foot, so gravel or e-bike. From Torre Santa Sabina the loop to Torre Guaceto on the white road is 26.1 km and 50 m.
Torre Guaceto is the reserve to plan a day around: a marine reserve since 1991 with 8 km of coast between Punta Penna Grossa and the rocks of Apani and 1,800 hectares of wetland and scrub behind it. Cars stop at the Consortium car park; a cycle and footpath of just over a kilometre runs through the scrub to the beaches, so the bike goes where the car cannot. Swimming is allowed in zone B from dawn to dusk; zone A is closed. One warning: the cycle path from Carovigno described in some guides does not exist yet; the 12.9 km from Carovigno to the reserve are on open roads.
Day trips from Ostuni by bike
Cisternino and the Via dei Colli. The classic loop: 45 km with 540 m of climbing on tarmac, out along the ridge road to Cisternino at 395 m, back through the trulli country. The fornelli pronti, Cisternino's butcher's grills, light around six in the evening: ride it in the afternoon and eat there, lights on for the return.
Villanova and the White City coast. From Villanova harbour the loop to Cisternino and back to Piazza della Libertà is 48.3 km and 500 m. Shorter and flat: Villanova to Torre Pozzelle and back, 36.1 km and 80 m.

Half a day, market, heat
In half a day: down to Torre Canne, swim, back up, about 40 km. Saturday morning is market day, 8:00 to 13:00. In July and August the seafront lanes are busy from late morning and the ridge has no shade: ride the sea leg early and the hill towns after five. Best months for the loops: April to June and September to October.
Which bike for Ostuni
Road bike if the loops to Cisternino and Villanova are your plan: all tarmac, climbs of 500 m over 45 km.
