The three areas to cycle in Puglia

Puglia isn't one riding region — it's three, and picking the right one matters more than picking the right bike.

Salento: flat, coastal, made for long days

The peninsula south of Taranto and Brindisi is almost entirely flat, which means you can ride 60-80 km in a day without real climbing. It's also the only area where you can reach both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts on the same ride. A well-known reference loop here — Maglie, Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Gallipoli, Nardò — runs 186 km and is rated easy by Italia.it, Italy's official tourism board; most riders split it over 2-3 days. This is our home ground: we're based in Lecce, with free pickup at our bike depots in Lecce, San Foca and Calimera. See bike rental in Lecce & Salento.

Valle d'Itria: white-stone lanes and gentle hills

Between Locorotondo, Alberobello, Cisternino, Ostuni and Martina Franca, the terrain turns into a dense network of white limestone country roads through trulli houses and olive groves, with manageable elevation: the three-town loop Locorotondo–Alberobello–Martina Franca is about 31 km and the towns sit 7 to 15 km apart, so you cross several of them in a day. Italia.it lists two official routes here: one from Bari through the Grotte di Castellana, Conversano, Rutigliano and Putignano to Alberobello, about 100 km, rated medium; and a separate Valle d'Itria route linking Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca, Cisternino, Altamura, Noci and Ostuni over 130 km, rated for expert riders. Rental delivery is available in Ostuni, Alberobello and Locorotondo & Martina Franca.

Gargano and the north: the hilliest riding in Puglia

The Gargano promontory — Vieste, Peschici, Monte Sant'Angelo — is where Puglia stops being flat. A coastal-to-hill loop here runs around 233 km and is rated challenging, again per Italia.it's official route data. It's the right choice if you specifically want climbing and forest roads rather than flat coastline.

Best time of year to cycle in Puglia

  • April-June: mild temperatures, longer daylight and green countryside.
  • September-October: similar temperatures to spring, plus harvest season in the olive groves and vineyards.
  • July-August: rideable but demanding — daytime temperatures regularly pass 30°C, so plan early-morning starts and carry more water than you think you need.
  • November-March: quiet roads and mild days are common, but rain and wind are less predictable; check the forecast a few days out rather than a week.

Road conditions and what to expect

Puglia has almost no dedicated bike paths outside a handful of urban stretches — but it also has very little traffic on its secondary roads once you're outside the main towns, and long sections are shaded by olive trees. Two things worth knowing before you go:

  • Water refill points are limited between towns, especially in Salento and the Murgia. Carry two bottles, not one, from April onward.
  • Traffic keeps right, as everywhere in Italy; roundabouts and unmarked junctions in small towns are where most close calls happen, not the open country roads.

The Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese: partly built, not yet a through-route

The Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese follows the historic aqueduct and is planned to run close to 500 km from Caposele, in Campania, to Santa Maria di Leuca. Only part of it exists on the ground. In its last official update the Regione Puglia (16 November 2024) reported roughly 22 km open in the Valle d'Itria, an 8 km section from Pineta Ulmo to Monte Fellone and a further 10 km completed towards Grottaglie, with 166 km under construction and the 157 km southern leg from Grottaglie down to Santa Maria di Leuca still at the design stage.

So it works today as a gravel day or half-day stage in the Valle d'Itria, not as a continuous ride into Salento. If you want it as part of a longer trip, we build it in as a stage — and check the current state of the works before departure rather than assuming the map is complete.

Routes and GPX

Every route we write up comes with a downloadable GPX track: browse them all in the Salento cycling routes category. If you're starting from the city, we've collected six day rides with distances, road surfaces and tracks in bike routes from Lecce. And if you'd rather have an itinerary built around you — stops, GPX and phone support included — see our self-guided bike tours in Salento.

Getting the right bike for where you're riding

  • Flat Salento day rides → a road or gravel bike is enough; see bike rental in Puglia for the full fleet.
  • Valle d'Itria's white roads and gentle hills → gravel handles the loose surface better than a road bike; see MTB & gravel in Salento.
  • Gargano's climbs, or longer daily distances in general → an e-bike keeps the climbing manageable without changing the route; see e-bike rental in Puglia.

Pickup is free at our bike depots in Lecce, San Foca and Calimera, and we can quote delivery anywhere else in the region — every bike goes out with a helmet, repair kit and lights already fitted.

FAQ

Is Puglia flat or hilly for cycling?
Both, depending on where you ride. Salento is almost entirely flat; Valle d'Itria is gently rolling; the Gargano promontory in the north has real climbing. Most first-time visitors start in Salento or Valle d'Itria.
Do I need to bring my own bike to Puglia?
No. Road, gravel and e-bikes are available for rental with delivery to your accommodation across the region, with free pickup at our bike depots in Lecce, San Foca and Calimera — see our fleet and prices.
Is Puglia suitable for beginner cyclists?
Yes, particularly Salento: flat terrain, quiet secondary roads and short distances between towns make it approachable for riders who don't train regularly. Valle d'Itria's gentle hills are still manageable for most fitness levels.
What is the best month to cycle in Puglia?
April to June and September to October offer the mildest temperatures and the most reliable weather. July and August are rideable with an early start but get hot; winter is quiet but less predictable for wind and rain.
Are there bike paths in Puglia, or do you ride on the road?
Mostly the road — Puglia has very few dedicated bike paths outside towns, but its network of shaded country roads carries little traffic. The Ciclovia dell'Acquedotto Pugliese is the main exception, with roughly 22 km of traffic-free greenway open in the Valle d'Itria and further sections built or under construction; the southern leg to Santa Maria di Leuca is still at the design stage.
Can I do a multi-day cycling trip in Puglia without a guide?
Yes — self-guided routes with route notes, GPX tracks, a rented bike and support on call are available; see self-guided bike tours in Salento and self-guided bike tours in Puglia. If you'd rather not plan any logistics, see cycling holidays in Puglia.
